Northern California Unit of the Herb Society of America
Who are we?

The Northern California Unit of the Herb Society of America are an active group of herb lovers!   The Unit was founded in 1953.   Our members have diverse backgrounds and varying levels of knowledge about herbs.  Our mutual interest is herbs; our specific interests in the use of herbs vary significantly.    We explore topics from horticultural aspects, culinary uses, medicinal uses, teas, harvesting and preserving, using for crafts and personal items, working with natural dyes, propagation and more.  We take field trips, invite speakers in, and hold workshops on various topics.  As we explore and gain more knowledge on herbs we share this with the community through public events, such as Herb Day, Spring Expo, Plant Sales and monthly meetings open to the public.

We meet at Rodgers Ranch at 315 Cortsen Rd., Pleasant Hill, CA, on the second Sunday of the month (usually).    This property is owned by the Pleasant Hill  Recreation and Park District  and administered and promoted by the Rodgers Ranch Heritage Association.    As a group we maintain the herb gardens surrounding the ranch house.   These gardens are open to the public to wander through, enjoy and learn.  The gardens are changing and growing as we work on them through the seasons.    There is always something going on in the gardens!

We have 12 monthly meetings, as well as several events through out the year.  There are many ways to participate in the organization from being on our herb interest list to becoming a member.  Click here to sign up for our herb interest list.   Not only do we learn and share a lot about herbs, their uses and places in our lives, we make new friends and have a lot of fun!

We are a unit of the larger national organization the Herb Society of America.  Both the parent organization and the unit are tax-exempt organizations focused on education.  To join the local unit, one must be a member of the national organization.  Individual, Family and Business memberships are available.  For more information  Click here to go to our Membership and contact page.

What is the Herb Society of America?

Motto of the Society:  "For Use and for Delight" - John Parkinson

The Herb Society is dedicated to promoting the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research,  and sharing the experience of its members with the community.     We are committed to protecting our global environment for the health and well-being of human-kind and all growing things.    The HSA was founded in 1933 and is the oldest advocate and proponent of herbs in the United States.   This group is concerned with the cultivation of herbs and with the study of their history and uses both past and present.    The National Herb Garden, sponsored and funded by the HSA, is located in the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington D.C.  The headquarters for the HSA is in Kirkland, Ohio.   There are currently 46 units throughout the United States and Canada.  Anyone interested in herbs can join the Herb Society of America.   There are individual, family and business memberships.

Come walk, explore and learn about herbs
The Herb Gardens at Rodgers Ranch
maintained by the Northern California Unit of the Herb Society of America

Starting at the side porch, walk around the back of the ranch house - visit the various beds and spiral garden.
We are continually working to update, manage, harvest, plant and use the plants in this herb garden.
If you want to learn more about herbs, watch them grow and develop and be worked through out the seasons.  Not sure what a certain herb looks like, check out as we attempt to label each and every plant.
Visit us often as we continue to add and update the gardens.  Soon to come will be a map and plant list.
